Amlwch Harbour
Amlwch Harbour is famous for its copper mines and there are relics from this period of history dotted about, as well as the ‘Copper Kingdom” visitor centre just above the harbour. The sea has a nice blue/green tinge to it and looks very inviting, very cold though throughout the year.
A small breakwater on the north coast of Anglesey, with rocky outcrops jutting out either side of the entrance which in fair weather are accessible. It takes around 30 minutes by car from the Britannia Bridge crossing. Fish can be had all round, the inside is particularly good when on a mini’s species hunt with plenty around during the summer months.
It is also famous among anglers for it’s Conger population that inhabit the area both on the inside and outside. The breakwater is a perfect habit for them with the shelter of the wall and nearby boulders, coupled with the rocky outcrops it is an ideal area to target them.
There are regular catches reported on fishing forums but I have not seen any monsters come out yet, usually small strap conger.
The inside of the Amlwch Harbour is not guarded/fenced so be careful if taking children. Fishing is easy enough as the breakwater itself is basically a large platform, tripod or against the wall with a rag to stop your rod being scratched.
Amlwch Breakwater is a comfortable fishing venue, try crab nets down the side for free bait, prawns / crab etc, it can also help get your numbers up in the species hunt 🙂 more often than not we catch quite a few mini species doing this. Great for small Pollcock, Corkwing wrasse etc
When fishing the rocky outcrops to the right hand side of Amlwch Breakwater (when facing the sea) there is a car park just further up than the Copper Kingdom. There is plenty of room and it never really has more than a few cars in it. It’s only a short walk too, down onto the rocks.
When fishing Amlwch Breakwater there is a bit of a walk from the road or like me you will drive down a very rough path. Drive down to the left of the grey garage and you will be on the right path, there is room for a few cars only. It is only a short walk from this point though it maybe a little unnerving for some drivers due to proximity to the water and the turning circle etc. It is the closest you can park to the venue.
Road to the parking area is a bit rough but it saves a walk, not many parking spaces available but its seldom used, it is quite close to the waters edge when turning your car around but safe enough if you take your time.
Species: Not exhaustive
Conger, Cod, Whiting, Corkwing and Ballan Wrasse,Whiting, Dogfish, Bullhuss, Pollock, various species of Minis can be caught down the sides.
Octopus and lobster are also caught at times. I have no recommendations for bait here other than Ragworm. Fish and squid will bring in the usual dogs and Huss at Night. I have often found the fishing here quite poor in winter but great during the warmer months.
