Pwllheli Beach
Pwllheli Beach is a vast sand and lightly shingle beach, with popular marks such as Gimblet Rock and the area in front of the golf course. It is a south facing beach and fishes well with a bit of an on shore breeze. Just be mindful that following periods of heavy wind there can be a lot of weed around.
The Gimblet Rock section is to the east, there is free parking directly behind the mark. This parking area has enough room for around 8 cars. I have fished a few times here and never found it as productive as historic fishing posts on the forums suggest. People will quite often fish off the rock itself around high tide, this gives extra distance and depth. I have seen people feathering here too with the odd one or two Mackerel being pulled out. If the shoals are there then you will be fine. As with most marks it can also fish very well at times, such is fishing.
There is no particular bait other than the standard Mackerel and Lug etc that I recommend. I have noticed peeler crab seems to produce the goods when other baits are slow though.
Further round through the holiday park, I have seen kids pulling in small Pollock to Mackerel feathers. Fishing straight off the side, this area must have a decent depth as I have seen divers in this section too.
Parking is next to the building in the pic below if fishing the Gimblet Rock end. It’s literally a 1 minute walk from the parking area.
It definitely produces at times, I have had Dab, whiting, Doggies, Mackerel and have seen Thornback Rays come out whilst fishing. The above picture is of the smallest Thornback I have ever seen! The guy caught it on a small piece of Peeler Crab, great setup with rigs ready to be swapped on each cast. Fishing like he was in a match against himself, will have to take a leaf from his book.
The rest of the beach in summer is covered with tourists, the further, more westerly section of the beach in front of the golf course has a reputation. It is one of the more well known hot spots for catching Sea Bream on the Llyn Peninsula. There is more than enough parking too.
Have a go around the Harbour entrance too with the LRF gear for a chance of Bass, there are also Mullet in the harbour during summer which can take a bit of patience. A bit of floating bread will help hcatch them, they are very nervous fish so keeping quiet and still while stalking will make things easier for you.
All in Sea fishing at Pwllheli beach is decent, there are plenty of different spots to try. As with most fishing marks it can fish well on it’s day and quite often it can throw up a few surprises. If you are constantly missing bites try using rigs with smaller hooks.
