Splash Point, Rhyl

Splash Point, Rhyl is quite a popular fish spot with the local fishing fraternity, it’s another easy accessible fishing mark along this stretch of the North Wales coast. It is generally fished on the incoming tide, 2 hours up 2 down.

There is plenty of parking on the main road and it’s a 30 second walk to the fishing marks, it is pay and display so take change.  There is plenty of space available for anglers and the parking is cheap enough too. There is the added bonus of a few local tackle shops close by, usually with at least one having fresh bait available if needed.

Fishing onto a sandy bottom the area is snag free (avoiding the groynes and sea defence rocks). There is no need for a tripod here as you can use the rails which run the length of the prom. There are a few benches around and it’s generally a comfortable fishing venue. Just be aware of bikes and bait snaffling dogs.

Similar to other sea fishing marks in the area it can produce well in the right conditions with plenty of Bass and flat fish in the summer months. The bass are usually small though some are in the 1-2lb bracket but it can throw up the odd surprise. Whiting and Codling can be caught in the winter months with obligatory Dogfish thrown in throughout the year. It has been known to produce the odd Bull Huss and Thornback Ray at times.

From May to August if fished at low tide there is a good chance of catching Smoothhounds in the area. They are quite abundant along this section of coastline, all the way down to Talacre. Peeler crab is the number one bait if you do decide to target them, failing that they can be partial to squid, Prawn and sometimes Ragworm.

Splash point is a popular mark with local anglers as it can fish well at times, fishing at night in winter or when the water temp increases around the end of April it starts to fish better.

The best bait for general fishing in this area is Lugworm which locals swear by, a local angler told me Rag doesn’t work. I blanked when I turned up with only Ragworm for general fishing. so he may be on to something.
